I used to go swimming here with my dad around 1966 to 1070? I was aged 11 to 15. We used to cycle from Hawkwell Hockley (around 6 miles) to Southend, swim and then cycle home. No gears on my bike in those days I can remember him giving me a bit of a push going up the hills. He had developed a love of swimming as an adult after my mum taught him to swim (she stayed home with my younger sisters during this time). He was determined I would love swimming too …… I still do.
