OUTCOME: Butlins Clacton was the second Butlins Camp to be closed. Clacton was the core of the camp. This was a shock announcement. In 1983 it had unfortunately made no profit over the last three years and it was decided it would take considerable investment to bring it up to the standards of modern times. It was eventually sold to a developer after many other visions for the site, and is now completely covered with housing, in sympathetic style to the former site, using much timber in its construction.
A very interesting historical account leading to it’s demise found here, plus the bonus of more camp information. Butlins Holiday Camps and Pools is of course another story. Just a tiny sample here.
