Trentham Gardens Lido
Looks a lovely pool to research the history. I believe it was art deco in design.
‘The aerial photograph above does not show the location. That is a reservoir in Trentham Park. I worked at the Lido in the glorious summer of 1976 and had a season ticket all through my school years. I was one of the last to swim there. Long after it had closed there was water left in the pool. With a group of my fiends we broke in at night and swam in the leaf coated pool. My next visit saw it full of metal chairs and the baskets used to hold swimmers clothes. I then saw the cafe and adjoining cottage bulldozed into the pool. It grassed over. It is now part of the monkey park. I visited there 7 or 8 years ago and suddenly recognised that we were standing on the pool. I recognised it from the slight incline and two trees which were still there from the 70’s. Last time I visited it is where the monkeys are fed. You can locate the site from the stream which runs from Spring Valley into the lake. The spring fed the pool through two sand filters and then emptied into the lake. ‘

I remember going to Trentham Gardens on a Jnr School trip prior to 1974. There was a miniature railway used to take you to the swimming lido.
This would be received so well. I suggest you email. My contact email is on comments page and Contact page. I will place any pictures on my page with acknowledgements. Added note: My comments boxes accept image urls only to prevent overloading the server and slowing the website. Hovering over the urls the pictures show very well and can be clicked to enlarge.A temporary “look” Thank you so much for this.
I have photos from 1984 with the ruined building and empty pool full of debris. How can I get these to you? If I also remember next time I’m up in Stoke I’ll go to the monkey park and try and get a picture of the location for you.
Very much appreciate your comment. I really thought I was onto something! So so interesting. I’ll correct my page. Anne
